Head Modeling in Maya 2011 Part 2

Usman Raza | Feb 27, 2011 | Comments 0

Welcome back to the 3d modeling class video series for the 3d modeling of a human head character in 3d modeling and animation software application Maya 2011. We are using the latest edition of the 3d modeling and animation software Maya and you will learn all the basic techniques of the 3d modeling like an expert in Maya. This is getting start tutorial for the 3d modeling of the character in the last part we adjusted the orthographic image in our workspace so that we can model our 3d character with an idea. This series is about 3d modeling and in this 3d modeling class you will go through all the modeling steps in Maya. From here onwards you will learn how to use the 3d modeling tools and command i.e. extrude tool, move tool, scale tool and rotate tool, adding Edge loop etc. you will also learn also the vertices, faces and edges are modified in 3d modeling that a simple 3d polygon cube is modified to a complex 3d character in computer graphics software application Maya 2011.

Steps:

head-modeling-02Create a polygon cube from the polygon primitives. Click on scale tool in your left side on the screen, there are the tool icon and fifth one icon is for scale tool, then scale your cube in such a way that orthographic image is completely hidden behind the cube from side and front but it should be out of the orthographic image’s boundary.

Press ‘ctrl + A’ twice for the channel box there in channel box put value in the Shape-Inputs. Recommended values: for Subdivision axis, Subdivision height and Subdivision caps is ‘2’.

Then you select the half faces and hit delete from keyboard. Go to edit menu and click on duplicate special or ‘ctrl + D’ and add value for x in scale option as ‘-1.000’ and mark the geometry type as instance. Now when you will model one half-side the other half will automatically be modeled. Now click on shading menu at the top of the view port menu and mark the x-ray. Then you can model basic shape of the face by using move tool press ‘W’ for the move tool. If you want to see you character in smoother shape then hit ‘3’ from the keyboard and press ‘1’ for coming back to the wire shaded mode. For adding more details your model you select the vertices one by one and then move them according to their orthographic geometry.

Edge loops divide you object into more small faces so for more edge loops right click select ‘vertex’, then go to ‘edit mesh’ and click on ‘add edge loops’ and then click on the vertex where you want to create edge loop as here you require edge loops for upper and lower boundary of the fore head and lips are and chin area. For using ‘add loops tool’ again and again hit ‘Y’ each time you want a new edge loop. You can use this technique for using any tool again and again.
