<h4>Here is Hand-On Exercise of this tutorial &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..!</h4>
<p>We are going deep in polygonal editing, we are going to lean about a very power full tool of Maya called Soft select tool.<br />
<img style="margin: 10px 10px 10px 50px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry01.jpg" alt="modeling-Strawberry-in-maya" width="424" height="360" /><br />
1) Go ahead and create a polygonal shaper with the default settings, and on the shaded mode<br />
2) Now for editing right click on the shaper and select the vertex.<br />
3) Select some of vertex and move them.<br />
<strong>Note</strong>: &#8211; One of thing you will see while moving large group of vertxseces you are going to get hard edges around the points you are moving those.<br />
A point where you want to move the movements more organelle if called soft selection.<br />
Now question is that how you do that? How to use soft selection? How to find soft selection? And how soft selection work? Well it’s very easy as you know that there is so many tool in the Maya most of them you see on your screen some or in the tool bars, but there are more tools in the selection and movements tool also. How you reach to more tools in Maya？It’s also very simple just dabble click any one of the move, rotate or select tool.<br />
When you dabble click on any of the tool on the place of where channel box appear you will see a new panel pops up this is what I call tools children. You don’t have to remember this way it is just what I call!! Ok so if you dabble click on the move tool you’ll see in a move tools tool menu. Scroll it down a little till you see a section there by the name of Soft Selection. This really handy and very useful for the object we are going to make just after the introdeuction of the soft selection tool.<br />
4) Now if the sphere is still selected and the vertex also as we let before then we are ready to go farther but if we are not then go to the</p>
<pre>Create &gt; Polygon &gt; Sphere</pre>
<p>And create a poly sphere with default settings and select the top Vertex by right clicking on the sphere.<br />
5) Now open the Move tool by dabble click on the move tool and on soft selection (to one the soft selection you have to click in the soft selection box)<br />
<strong>Note </strong>: &#8211; Now you will see there is the vertices you have selected become yellow. Under Soft Selection you see falloff mode and falloff radius what this is? From here you can dial in the radius over the selection the soft selection will effective. So now any vertex you will select now has falloff and everything is selected move 100% with the radius falloff. Let’s move any of the vertex you will see now the movement is very different and move organic then before. This is very heady and power full way to model organically. Thing not work just for the move tool also for scale and rotate tool, and more about the tool you can choose Curve presets form carve presets also.<br />
<img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry02.jpg" alt="modeling-Strawberry02" width="295" height="356" /><br />
If you turn on this for one tool it will on for the other scale and rotate tool also you after using the soft selection don’t forget to off the soft selection.<br />
<img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry03.jpg" alt="modeling-Strawberry03" width="308" height="252" /><br />
One last thing I like to explain about is the reflection tool under the soft selecting. This is also so Help full when we want to model some organic object and its metrical on the reflection and move any of the vertex you will see that the opposite axis any of one you have select the reflecting take command on X, Y or Z the axis move with the selection. This is also very help full and save over time on some places just keep in mind that it’s there because we might use this also in out object we are going to make. Now we are ready to move on let’s stat modeling the strawberry.<br />
<img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry04.jpg" alt="modeling-Strawberry04" width="400" height="282" /><br />
6) First of all create a sphere select the vertex and on the soft selection form the move tool<br />
<img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry05.jpg" alt="modeling-Strawberry05" width="400" height="295" /><br />
7) Now select one of the vertex of one corner set the valium of the radius to 4 , move vertex in Z axis not do the same in the opposite side while you see that sphere look like strawberry.<br />
<img src='http://www.freemayavideotutorials.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_cool.gif' alt='8)' class='wp-smiley' /> Now select the vertex of down side and change the radius to 2 and just move down a little.<br />
9) Now deselect the soft selecting tool and go in object mode.<br />
10) By using the scale tool scale the sphere as much you see the strawberry looks good.<br />
11) Select the all faces of the object and go in Edit mash</p>
<pre>Edit mash &gt; Pock face</pre>
<p><img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry07.JPG" alt="modeling-Strawberry07" width="510" height="392" /><br />
We just added more edges in our object now we have to deselect all of edges we don’t need. Delete the horizontal and vertical edges beside of edges which are in 45 degree angles and create every single face shape like diamond<br />
Like the picture below<br />
<img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry08.JPG" alt="modeling-Strawberry08" width="487" height="383" /><br />
<img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry09.JPG" alt="modeling-Strawberry09" width="474" height="400" /><br />
12) Next select the all faces again and this time open the Mash and deselect the keep face to gather</p>
<pre>Mash &gt; Keep face together</pre>
<p>13) Now use the extrude select the scale point of extrude</p>
<pre>Edit mash &gt; extrude</pre>
<p><img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry12.JPG" alt="modeling-Strawberry12" width="587" height="462" /><br />
And scale form center and move just a little out.<br />
14) Once aging select the extrude tool</p>
<pre>Edit Mash &gt; extrude</pre>
<p>15) Now once move inside just a little and repute the extrude once aging and this time just move the face out<br />
That is all press 3 or smooths the object we just created the strawberry<br />
Now the next is to create the cape you almost see on the head of the strawberries make a poly cylinder this time and by extrude you can make the head of the strawberry by extruding the faces but don’t forget to select the keep faces together tool again.<br />
<img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry14.JPG" alt="modeling-Strawberry14" width="447" height="346" /><br />
<img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry18.JPG" alt="modeling-Strawberry18" width="445" height="350" /><br />
<img style="margin: 10px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/modeling-Strawberry/modeling-Strawberry20.JPG" alt="modeling-Strawberry20" width="517" height="400" /></p>

This kind of modeling is mostly used in game developing and movie visual effects. Polymodeling is assumed as major part in the history of modeling in Maya 3D graphics. In earlier, before the discovery of NURBS, Polygon was the one and only and unique method for 3d modeling. It was also used in game developing and 3d movies and many famous characters are created under polymodeling condition, for example stuart Little though a filmy character. Polygonal modeling is considered as most special feature of 3d modeling and the artists feel ease using them in their projects. In Maya projects, we generally handle the mesh by using its component level. The component level of poly object are its vertices, edge and face. These component level help us to modify the shape of the object by using custom method for components. On this site you can find numbers of poly modeling tutorials with complete detail. To learn this interesting job of poly organic modeling you have to wait and watch. Because you can learn it in a day or two, it will take enough time in learning. If you are tended to become professional game modeler then first of all learn about poly modeling with full information. Because it helps solo performer much more in his career and after this you can create wonderful game at home and get money from reliable companies.<br />

<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">
</script></p>
<p><strong>Here is step by step Hand-on Excercise </strong><br />
While modeling with all types of organic Modeling, a good Modeler always uses image references. Reference is an essential part organic modeling. Arranging and adjusting reference in the scene of Maya is a different lesson. In this lesson we just start modeling with polygonal cube.</p>
<h4>Let&#8217;s Start &#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;.. ! ! !</h4>
<ol>
<li>Arrange an image reference for your model or use the image below,<a href="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/Downlaods/Puppy.zip" target="_blank"> </a><strong><a href="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/Downlaods/Puppy.zip" target="_blank"><span class="external">Download</span></a> </strong>tiff file for Maya.</li>
<li>Go to Create Menu &gt; Polygon Primitives &gt; Cube</li>
<p><img style="border: 1px dotted #adadad; margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image002.gif" alt="image002" width="384" height="284" /></p>
<li>Scale Cube and adjust it on the body of puppy. See image below.</li>
<p><img style="border: 1px dotted #adadad; margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image004.gif" alt="image002" width="384" height="284" /></p>
<li>Right click on cube and from marking menu choose vertex</li>
<p><img style="border: 1px dotted #adadad; margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image006.gif" alt="image002" width="384" height="284" /></p>
<p>For this type of organic modeling you must work in component mode of the object. It has been observed that most of the beginners think about modeling a one sitting job. You cannot model a good character in one sitting, so keep in your mind that you will have spent much time on it.</p>
<p>You are going to model a puppy dog in this video tutorial with a simple primitive poly cube. We’ll use the method of extrude face. Extrude face again and again and keep going ahead on reference. Move vertices and fit them on the image. In first attempt you will roughly adjust the vertices. Use rotate tool for the rotation of face or simply drag select vertex and move it to the proper place on reference.</p>
<p>Go to perspective view select face and come back to the side view, get extrude command.</p>
<p>Now you will extrude the face. Extrude it a little and then right click on object and get vertex mode of object, then move vertices to their proper place according to image reference.</p>
<p>Then again get a face extruded and move it a little then again go the vertex mode and move vertices. You will repeat the same things until you complete the rough object for puppy’s body. Remember that you working in side view. It means that the work in other views is still pending because we are modeling a 3d object, not a 2d object for which we work in a single view.</p>
<p>Always select the vertices with drag selection because when you select a vertex by clicking on it, it means that you are selecting only one vertex which is facing you. With drag selection, you select the vertex of opposite side as well.</p>
<p>Keep this work continued, extrude a single face, move it and adjust it on the reference. It will take some time. Don’t worry about that.</p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image008.gif" alt="image008" width="360" height="187" /></p>
<p>Because you will have to do this struggle, actually you need wire cage on your reference. You know that you have 2 dimensional reference and you are modeling a 3 dimensional object. When you once complete the cage you will shape it in 3d view.</p>
<p>Although Organic modeling is an interesting job but it needs struggle. You will have to wait. You will have to spend time. Poly organic modeling mostly used in video games, Most of the Video games need lo poly characters. Lo poly characters mean 3d organic characters that have less mesh and they are not so heavy for machine.</p>
<p>If you want to become a video game modeler, you can make your career as a solo performer at all. There are countless solo performers making first person shooter games from there homes and selling on high prices to reliable companies.</p>
<p>Ok</p>
<p>Continue your work with selecting and moving vertices until you get acceptable results. You will have to switch to other view for checking the result of your work. Maybe you are doing well in one view but in other view your object is going to be odd disturbed.</p>
<li>When you once finish caging the chest and head of puppy you can start the same procedure for the back of the puppy. See image below,</li>
<p><img style="border: 1px dotted #b0a3a0; margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image010.gif" alt="image010" width="384" height="266" /></p>
<p>When you have finish initial shape of the body of puppy just hide the image reference. For this,</p>
<li>Go to the Layer Editor in Channel Box</li>
<li>Create a New Layer for image plan and Add image plan to the layer</li>
<li>Switch off the visibility of layer</li>
<p><img style="margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image012.gif" alt="image012" width="384" height="299" /></p>
<p>Next you will add an edge loop to the object</p>
<li>Go to the top view</li>
<p><img style="border: 1px dotted #adadad; margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image014.gif" alt="image014" width="384" height="299" /></p>
<li>Go to Edit Mesh Menu &gt; Insert edge loop tool</li>
<li>Insert an edge loop in the middle of the object. See image below.</li>
<p><img style="border: 1px dotted #adadad; margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image016.gif" alt="image016" width="384" height="299" /></p>
<li>Right click on object and select Face component level.</li>
<p><img style="border: 1px dotted #adadad; margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image018.gif" alt="image018" width="384" height="299" /></p>
<li>Delete left side faces</li>
<li>In this way you will have only half side of the object.</li>
<p><img style="border: 1px dotted #adadad; margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image020.gif" alt="image020" width="384" height="299" /></p>
<li>Again go to the Edit Mesh Menu and insert more edges to the object. See images below.</li>
<p><img style="border: 1px dotted #adadad; margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image022.gif" alt="image022" width="384" height="299" /><br />
<img style="margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image024.gif" alt="image024" width="384" height="299" /></p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/poly_puppy/image027.gif" alt="image027" width="384" height="299" /></ol>

<strong>Here is step by step Hand-on Excercise </strong><br />
15. Go to Select Menu &gt; Select Edge Loop Tool<br />
16. Select 3 edge loops of side of puppy’s rough body<br />
17. Select Move tool and Move edge loops outwards a little bit.<br />
<img class="alignnone" style="margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part2/image019.gif" alt="image019" width="318" height="177" /><br />
Try to move edge loops one by one or collectively and get a rounded shape of the object.<br />
Try to move faces as well if needed.<br />
<img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part2/image004.gif" alt="image004" width="323" height="164" /></p>
<p>18. Right click on object and select vertex</p>
<p>19. Move vertices of puppy’s tail and narrow them according to height and width of the image tail.</p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part2/image020.gif" alt="image020" width="271" height="184" /><br />
<strong>Ok</strong></p>
<p>This is the time you may start modeling front leg of the puppy. Because before we finalize the model we’ll have to model all objects of the model. Let’s create front leg.<br />
20. Create a Poly Cube with default settings<br />
<img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part2/image008.gif" alt="image008" width="344" height="163" /><br />
21. Go to the side view and choose vertices</p>
<p>22. Move vertices and fit them on the foot of the puppy’s leg</p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part2/image010.gif" alt="image010" width="355" height="169" /><br />
23. Go to perspective view and move foot on its proper place a suitable distance, which you feel proper.<br />
See the image below.<br />
<img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part2/image012.gif" alt="image012" width="359" height="177" /><br />
24. Again go to side view and add faces to the cube as you did for the body of the puppy.</p>
<p>See image below.<br />
<img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part2/image014.gif" alt="image014" width="362" height="179" /><br />
25. Keep on Extruding faces until you reach at top of the front leg</p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part2/image016.gif" alt="image016" width="378" height="180" /></p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part2/image018.gif" alt="image018" width="351" height="183" /></p>

In this tutorial we will model a puppy with Poly</p>
<h3>Here is step by step Hand-on Excercise</h3>
<h4>Let’s go ahead!&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..</h4>
<p>We are modeling front leg of our puppy. It is the time to bend the upper portion of the thigh.<br />
26. Select face and extrude it towards the body</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="aligncenter" style="margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part3/image002.gif" alt="image002" width="360" height="179" /></p>
<p>27. Extrude more faces until insert the end of the leg into the body<br />
<img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part3/image023.gif" alt="image023" width="364" height="184" /></p>
<p>28. Go to the layer editor and hide everything except front leg.</p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part3/image006.gif" alt="image006" width="271" height="178" /></p>
<p>Now you should increase the edge loops in front leg</p>
<p>29. Go to the Edit Mesh Menu &gt; Insert edge loop tool</p>
<p>30. Add an edge loop in both sides of the leg. See image below</p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part3/image008.gif" alt="image008" width="271" height="179" /></p>
<p>You will add more edge loops and modify in vertex mode. Ultimately you will get a dog’s leg like shape.</p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part3/image010.gif" alt="image010" width="362" height="180" /></p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part3/image012.gif" alt="image012" width="360" height="178" /></p>
<p>Try to move, rotate and scale edge loops and vertices until you are satisfied with the shape of leg</p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part3/image014.gif" alt="image014" width="362" height="180" /></p>
<p>Ok,</p>
<p>Now you will model back leg</p>
<p>31. Start modeling back leg with a single Poly Cube as you did for previous 2 objects.</p>
<p>32. Go to Create Menu and Create a Poly Cube with default settings</p>
<p>33. Place the Cube on back leg foot using image reference</p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part3/image016.gif" alt="image016" width="359" height="182" /></p>
<p>34. Repeat the same procedure for back leg as you did for the front leg</p>
<p>35. Extrude faces, go to vertex mode, move vertices on reference image. See images below.</p>
<p><img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part3/image018.gif" alt="image018" width="362" height="179" /><br />

</script><br />
In this tutorial we will model a puppy with Poly<br />
<strong>Here is step by step Hand-on Excercise</strong></p>
<h4>Let’s finish this lengthy work.</h4>
<p>We have done almost the main frame of our 3d object. Just after finishing the back leg, our main model will be ready.<br />
36. Move and rotate the faces and vertices of the puppy’s body.<br />
<img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part4/image002.gif" alt="image002" width="365" height="182" /><br />
When you have done the rounded shape of back leg and fit it into the body of puppy, your main frame is ready. Now you can mirror the geometry.<br />
37. Select the body of puppy<br />
38. Go to the Mesh Menu &gt; Mirror Geometry<br />
<img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part4/image004.gif" alt="image004" width="358" height="180" /><br />
39. Select one leg and repeat step No.38 and then Select the second leg and repeat step No.38<br />
<img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part4/image006.gif" alt="image006" width="358" height="177" /><br />
40. Now you need to merge edges of the legs to the body. But it is not necessary for this lesson. For this lesson you just need to move the vertices of mouth as you moved in previous steps and then you will smooth the whole object. That’s it.<br />
When you combine and merge the edges one by one to the body you will get a single object.<br />
<img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part4/image008.gif" alt="image008" width="360" height="183" /><br />
You still to enhance the object. And when you have done, you will add eyes, ears mouth and whatsoever is necessary for the object.<br />
<img style="margin: 5px 5px 5px 20px;" src="http://www.mayavideotutorial.com/images/maya-pics-articles/puppy_part4/image010.gif" alt="image010" width="360" height="179" /><br />
This lesson was your travel to the polygonal modeling in Maya. In next lessons you will learn how to perfect a real 3d model. See the image below.</p>
